Hi, I'm Jill Stroh. That's me on the left as a kid in the red plaid and yellow shirt, (evidence that my mom sewed). That's my older sister Holly with the monkey, a kind of weird looking monkey. My little brother Jeff is in the background sucking his thumb, so that makes me the middle child. We had a great childhood, with fun, loving and creative parents.
My Mom sewed a lot. You name it, she sewed it. So naturally I followed in her footsteps, or at least tried to, I got off to a rocky start though. In Junior High I made a royal blue duffel bag that got considerably narrower at one end. I made a shirt and shorts that weren't quite right for some reason but if you titled your head when looking at them they looked better. (The trend of one leg in a pair of shorts being longer than the other never took off!)
My family moved around quite a bit, we basically did a small tour of the Mid-West. Every house we moved into was a blank canvas. I can vividly remember scouring through wallpaper books with my mom, and trips to the fabric store looking for that perfect color palette and pattern to make our house a home. We always had a say in our rooms and that is where I think I got the bug for design/sewing/DIY. I can remember playing fabric store as a kid and raiding my mom's sewing chest for scraps of fabric and spools of thread. I even played "realtor" and I'd draw brochures of houses and "make phone calls" about great places that came on the market and have my friend come to my house for a "showing."
My parents bought me my first sewing machine after I graduated from college and moved off to Hoboken, NJ. I worked in NYC at an ad agency and then for a market research firm, so I had to become thrifty. I made futon covers, pillows, curtains, and the occassional tank top. My mom and I even recovered an old couch from a neighbor for my new apartment.
I went back to school for interior design while in NYC and just as I finished my second class, my husband and I, (whom I met in Hoboken) decided to move to Pittsburgh in 2006. Two houses and two kids later, I am still sewing! (And still learning sewing tips and tricks from my Mom!)
Here's to doing what you love!
Hi and Welcome!
Having always loved to create and sew, it was only a matter of time that my passion and hobby became a career. With my kids now in school all day it was time to get a bit more serious about "going back to work." Through talking with friends, word spread about how I Iike to sew and slowly but surely things started taking off. A roman shade for a friend here, pillows for a kids room there, etc. It wasn't until a collaboration with Hoodridge Design that really got things rolling for me. We did a large drapery installation on a beautiful floor to ceiling bay window that Hoodridge Design shared on Instagram with the hashtag ‘mytextiletailor’ and voila!
